The number of domain names registered around the world passed 350 million in the second quarter of 2019, totalling 354.7 million as of 30 June, according to the latest Domain Name Industry Brief [pdf] from Verisign. During the quarter there was an increase of 2.9 million domain name registrations, or 0.8%, compared to the first quarter of 2019. Domain name registrations have grown by 14.9 million, or 4.4%, year over year and are up 74.7 million, or 26.7%, in 5 years.

For the 2 biggest top-level domains managed by Verisign there were continuing mixed fortunes. As of 30 June there were 142.5 million .com domain name registrations, while for .net there were 13.6 million. Compared to 12 months ago there were 135.6 million .com domain names and 5 years ago 113.7 million. But while .com continues to grow, .net continues to slide from 14.1 million 12 months ago and is now back to the same figure 5 years ago – 13.6 million. It appears .net peaked in the fourth quarter of 2016 at 15.3 million registrations.

New .com and .net domain name registrations totalled 10.3 million at the end of the second quarter of 2019, compared to 9.6 million domain name registrations at the end of the second quarter of 2018.

Country-code TLD (ccTLD) domain name registrations were 158.7 million at the end of the second quarter, an increase of 1.9 million, or 1.2%, compared to the first quarter of 2019. ccTLDs increased by 8.9 million, or 6.0%, year over year. Without including .tk, whose domains are largely given away for free, ccTLD registrations increased by 1.9 million for the quarter, or 1.4%. ccTLDs, excluding .tk, increased by 7.9 million, or 6.1%, year over year.

For new gTLDs they trod water with an increase of 0.1 million to approximately 23.0 million at the end of the second quarter, an increase of just 0.4%, compared to the first quarter. For the year new gTLDs increased by 1.3 million or 5.9% year over year.
